Seed-to-Sky Grow Guide

Welcome to the Seed-to-Sky Grow Guide

Your quick, confidence-boosting cheat sheet for turning that little peat pot into real, thriving growth at home.

The 60-Second Success Checklist

Before you dive into the plant-specific tips, these four rules make almost everything work:

1) Light wins.
A bright window is your best friend. Outdoors comes later, when temperatures cooperate.

2) Moist, not muddy.
Think “wrung-out sponge,” not “swamp.”

3) Pinch, don’t pour.
A pinch of seeds is plenty. A handful becomes a crowded competition.

4) Shallow is smart.
Most small seeds want a light cover of soil, not a deep burial.

Quick Start: What to Do When You Get Home

  1. Place your pot in a bright window (or sheltered outdoor spot if it’s warm).

  2. Keep soil lightly damp for the first 1–2 weeks.

  3. Once sprouts appear, water only when the top soil feels slightly dry.

  4. When your plant has 2–3 sets of true leaves, it’s ready to move up into a larger pot (or garden bed).

Moving outdoors?
Harden off” your plant for 3–5 days: outside for a few hours, back in, gradually increasing time outdoors.

Your Plant Guides

Parsley

The steady grower. Reliable, forgiving, and the kind of plant that quietly becomes a kitchen staple.

How it grows:

  • Light: Bright window or partial sun outdoors

  • Water: Keep soil lightly damp (not soaked)

  • Timing: Slower to start—but worth the wait

  • Sprout window: ~14–28 days (parsley takes its time)

  • Best tip: Snip a little at a time once established—regular harvesting encourages new growth

Perfect for: soups, salads, and feeling instantly more accomplished.

Chives

Small plant, big personality. Fast to sprout, easy to care for, and a beginner favourite.

How it grows:

  • Light: Bright light or full sun

  • Water: Water when the top soil feels slightly dry

  • Sprout window: ~7–14 days

  • Best tip: Trim often—chives bounce back stronger when harvested

  • Extra win: Chives can keep producing for a long time with regular snips

Perfect for: eggs, potatoes, and the “I grew this” brag.

Native Pollinator Pick (Yarrow)

Plant for the Island. Pollinator-friendly and built for the long game—this is your Earth Month “small action, real impact” plant.

How it grows:

  • Light: Full sun is best (bright window to start)

  • Water: Light, steady moisture until established—then it’s drought-tolerant

  • Timing: Slow and steady—native plants take their time and reward patience

  • Sprout window: ~10–21+ days (varies by native species)

  • Best tip: Don’t overwater. Once established, less is more.

Perfect for: helping pollinators, supporting local ecosystems, and bringing Earth Month home with you.

A quick responsible planting note:
Plant only where appropriate—avoid scattering seeds in natural areas. If you’re unsure, keep it in a pot or garden bed.

When to “Pot Up” (Transplanting Made Easy)

Your peat pot is the starter home. Move to a bigger pot when:

  • sprouts have 2–3 sets of true leaves, or

  • roots begin to fill the cup, or

  • the plant starts looking top-heavy.

Pot tip: Use well-draining soil and give it room—plants love a little space.
