Western Toads have a fascinating survival tactic; They can burrow themselves into the soil to hibernate for months. This toad also has a parotoid gland that secretes a milky toxin to deter predators, making it less appealing to would-be threats. Their lifecycle from tadpole to adult is a wonder to observe, particularly their transformation during metamorphosis.

Start facing the sign. Turn to your right and continue on the trail and across the bridge. Pay close attention as you cross the bridge. If you haven't spotted it by the time you reach the other side, take a few more steps on the path, then turn back around and see if you can spot it now!
